Best Hair Colors for Blue Eyes: 15 Options for All Skin Tones Pro Tips

blonde hair and blue eyes

However, if you have warm undertones in your skin, a cool blonde shade may not be the best choice for you. If one parent has a darker complexion and the other has a lighter complexion, then their children could have a mix of light or dark hair, eyes, and skin. The cool colors mentioned here and even the cooler color arrays like the olive greens and mint will not just gray the skin but also make your highlights appear brassy and yellow. As a pale blonde, you should avoid clothing that comes in red, orange, and also the ones with gold undertones because these bold colors will overwhelm your look.

How rare is brown hair with blue eyes combo?

Overall, creating a personal color palette for those with blonde hair and blue eyes is a fun and exciting process. By taking into account your personal style and skin undertones, you can create a palette that truly reflects you. While there are certain colors that tend to complement this combination, it ultimately comes down to personal preference and skin undertones. As mentioned earlier, cool tones such as blues, greens, and purples tend to work well with blonde hair and blue eyes. However, warm tones such as oranges and reds can also be blended with greens to create a unique and eye-catching look. It is important to take into account your skin undertones when creating your color palette.

Blondes aren’t forever:

The top layer, called the epithelium, is where melanin is lodged. If you have plenty of melanin in the top layer, your eyes will be brown. "The question really is, 'Why did we go from having nobody on Earth with blue eyes 10,000 years ago to having 20 or 40 percent of Europeans having blue eyes now?" Hawks said. "This gene does something good for people. It makes them have more kids." Although it seems a bit extreme, blue hair pairs well with blue eyes as it has a very impactful look for the person wearing it.

When this answer was published in 2018, Margaret was a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, studying population genomics in Jonathan Pritchard’s laboratory. She wrote this answer while participating in the Stanford at The Tech program. You can do so by creating waves and some lowlights and highlights that give your overall look texture and depth.

Highlights are lighter than your base color, whereas low lights are a darker shade than your base color. It is noteworthy, however, that having blue eyes is not diabolic or evil, and the only way to know if someone has natural or artificial blue eyes is to ask the person. Blue eyes also come about when a person of African ancestry has Caucasian relatives on both sides of the family who are carriers of the gene for that particular eye color. Professor Hans Eiberg and his team studied this at the University of Copenhagen. They studied the genes of 800 men and women with blue eyes and concluded that all of them had the exact same gene sequence.

Why Do Most Blonde-Haired Scandinavians Have Blue Eyes?

Having one side of your blonde hair pulled back is an exquisite way to draw attention to your blue eyes. You can further use minimal makeup to accentuate your natural features and pull the entire look together.

Warm Honey Blonde

That makes the blue eye and red hair combination even more unlikely to happen. All of these warm colors are going to complement your blue eyes well while making your eyes the focus. This is also a beautiful hair color if you have a warm skin tone, as it will bring out the warmth in your skin to further contrast with the cool blue of your eyes. These genes are tightly “linked”, meaning that they’re usually all inherited together. This is why people typically have either all light features, or all dark features. It’s still possible to get a combination of shades of hair, eyes, and skin, but it’s less likely.

Cream or liquid blushes work well for those with fair skin, as they create a natural, dewy look that complements your features. Powder blushes can often look too harsh on fair skin, so consider using a cream or liquid blush for a more natural look. According to an American Academy of Ophthalmology survey, green eyes are the rarest. Only 9% of Americans have green eyes, compared with 45% who have brown eyes and 27% who have blue eyes. Combining all three of them will determine the exact hair color that you should get. Darker hair will match olive skin undertones, while those with a yellowish hue should stay away from yellow or orange hair.

Blake Lively has amazing long hair that offers her plenty of hairstyling opportunities. This time, she chose a side ponytail decorated at the base that features a long braid secured with a hair strand. Helen Mirren’s short bob with twisted ends and bangs provides a great face frame. The actress wore a light gray color for the roots and a warm blonde. She loves sleek looks, but she’s not afraid to embrace her frizzy hair and pull off a great hairstyle out of that. And the best example is this hairstyle that features a large top hair bump and a back hairdo.

Plus, it has a beautiful light-reflecting finish.” The formula is also boosted with pro-vitamin B5 to keep your delicate eyelid skin nourished. For most Scandinavians living in Nordic countries, having blue eyes is like having brown eyes in another country (as in, highly common). Scandinavians like having blue eyes just as much as anyone else likes having brown or green eyes. Scandinavians are more likely to have children with brown eyes if they have a darker-eyed partner or a brown-eyed gene in the family.

Using numerous shades and nuances of blonde, highlights, and lowlights, you can create all sorts of looks to suit even the most pretentious eyes. Andreea is a content writer with a deep love for hair and colors. She's not afraid to experience the haircuts and bright, powerful nuances she writes about. Moreover, she adores ombres and all types of color blendings, no matter the nuance or hair length. If you want to give your hair more texture and depth, you can try to change it using highlights and lowlights.

When it comes to choosing the right color palette for blonde hair and blue eyes, understanding your skin tone is crucial. Your skin tone can be classified as cool, warm, or neutral, and each tone has different undertones that affect how colors look on you. As for the brown eyes, 50 – 70 % of the global population had brown eyes.

Some Scandinavians prefer darker eyes over blue eyes because it’s rarer for them and, therefore, more intriguing. However, they might increase your risk of health problems like type 1 diabetes and eye cancer. Protecting your eyes and getting regular checkups is important no matter the color of your irises. If you have blue eyes, it means the iris part of your eyes lacks melanin, so, technically, blue eyes don't have any color. Eye health providers remind almost everyone with blue eyes to wear sunglasses to reduce their risk of potential eye cancers like eye melanoma.

What Is the Rarest Hair Color and Eye Color Combination in the World?

You don’t get to see this occur naturally, but if you have deep blue eyes, the best color combination to get is raven-black hair. While light hair colors like shades of blond come to mind first when thinking of blue eyes, Megan Fox demonstrates how flatting a deep espresso brown is. Silver hair has made a resurgence in hair trends recently, and nothing pairs better with cool-toned blue eyes than the cool-toned silver hair color. This hair color, paired with your blue eyes, especially if you have cool undertones in your skin, is going to give that cool ice look all around. But you asked about blue eyes specifically, not just light-colored ones.

She brings the women’s perspective on beards, beard care, haircuts and hairstyles and male grooming. Start using some color-friendly shampoos and moisturizers when washing your hair. Also, you might want to switch to cold water for some time as it will lock the new hair color to your hair. An iris with a lot of melanin absorbs light, making it appear darker. And an iris that has some melanin will absorb some light and scatter the rest, making it appear green.

Colors to Wear

It’s more natural looking and, depending on the undertones of the deep brown, can have an almost equal balance between neutralizing the blue in your eyes and making them stand out. This deep shade of brown is also almost guaranteed to go exceptionally well with any skin tone. On the other hand, warm blondes should avoid cool colors like the shades of pink, blue, and yellow, and also the reds with blue undertones like purple. According to color theory, blondes with light eyes and fair skin look best in the pale and even the subdued colors like light blues, pastels, beige, browns, purples, and greens. And in some cases, one can throw in the jewel-toned colors like the blue-greens mixed with some reds for that nice touch of contrast. It would be more accurate to say that some genes affect both traits. And that a person’s ancestry affects the chance of inheriting both traits, as described in this article. If two parents have different complexions, these genes can get mixed around a bit.

You can easily pair a platinum hair color with blue eyes, mainly if you are ligt-skined. It marks for a bold and bright look and will even emphasize your lips. One of the trendiest color choices is the espresso brown hue which can pair magnificently with any skin tone. Blonde hair is the best, most suitable, and most common pairing with blue eyes. It comes naturally as people with naturally lighter hair usually do have blonde eyes, to begin with.

Black Hair and Green Eyes

Black hair and blue eyes is a much more rare combination than is blonde hair and blue eyes. Jasmine Sanders's blue eyes and medium skin tone are complemented beautifully by her caramel-blond hair color. Imagine if there was a region where most people had lighter complexions. As the population grows and people have babies, the genes for less melanin will become more common. That makes the link between lighter eyes, hair, and skin tighter.

Well, the way the DNA gets mixed up is that big bunches all go at once. What this means is that the closer two genes are to one another, the more likely they will travel as a pair when DNA is swapped. You might also remember that we all get half our DNA from our mom and half from our dad. A lot of people conclude from this that we each get 23 chromosomes from each parent that are exactly the same as one of the ones our parents had. Fashionblyo is a team of stylist, We believe that fashion is for everyone, regardless of age, size, or budget. This is due to the nature of brown genes being a dominant gene. Hence, even when combined with red hair genes, which is a recessive allele, the offspring will still have brown hair. There are other shades of eye color out there that haven’t yet been matched with the right hair color. For example, red/ pink eyes for albinism can’t really be matched with blonde hair. Also, grey, violet, and purple eyes from people who have very little melanin, with redheads. This blend isn’t as unique as the first one since green eyes are actually more common than blue eyes.

Best Metallic Palette

For example, for chromosome 15, one would be exactly the same as one of mom's and the other would be exactly the same as one of dad's. Dirty-blond hair looks great with blue eyes, as demonstrated by Taylor Swift. If you’re already a blonde but are looking for a change in hair color that isn’t quite as drastic, we recommend leaving your hair a different shade or tone of blonde. We also recommend against dull or dark colors, especially black, because it is a harsh color for a warm-toned blonde. Gwyneth Paltrow has a brilliant trick that helps her hide her white strands, and we’re willing to share it. She keeps hair in a light blonde color, so the white will amazingly blend after they pop.

To give the hairdo a little bit of fuss, she went for easy waves that you can replicate at home with a triple curler. Go for a bob haircut or secure the rest of your longer tresses in the back, in a pony or bun. Nonchalant waves work so well for those who have long fine hair.

Eyes with no melanin scatter all the light, making them appear blue. But if you are warm-toned, you could get away with the lemony yellows. So, in as much as these warm colors look great on others, you need to avoid the warm colors at all costs. You may also want to switch out the pastels for aqua and turquoise, as well as the lemony shade of yellow, some coral, peach, or even a deep purple such as amethyst.

If you have fair skin, try wearing pastel colors like light blue, light teal, silver, and lilac. For a bolder look, try wearing bright colors like hot pink, electric blue, or emerald green. Those with cool undertones may want to lean towards cooler shades, while those with warmer undertones may want to incorporate warmer shades. When creating your color palette, it is helpful to start with a few staple colors that you love and wear often. These can be neutral or bold, depending on your personal style. From there, you can add in accent colors that you enjoy but may not wear as often.

Yes, dark red to ginger is very common in areas like Ireland and very uncommon in other continents like Africa. Considering blue eyes are recessive and often overshadowed by brown eyes, one would assume not many people would have blue eyes anymore. Red is the rarest hair color, but to understand why that’s the case, you need a basic grasp of the science. There’s a lot more to it than the simple traits we learned about in high school biology.

McCormick Residence Fandom

kenny's house

Although its appearance throughout the series has remained generally constant, consisting of a single bungalow and a detached garage, its exterior appearance has varied slightly over time. While originally painted a bright green, its color appears to have faded over time, resembling the color of the Broflovski Residence and the Testaburger Residence. In earlier appearances, random junk also appeared littered around the house, including a number of animals, but the front lawn appears to have been cleared up in more recent appearances.

Stuart McCormick

Throughout the tenth, twelfth, eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-third seasons, Kenny did not die once. Kenny died three times in total in Season Thirteen, five times in Season Fourteen, and once in seasons fifteen, sixteen, twenty-one and twenty-two. Kenny has fought on a few occasions and is most likely the most physically active out of all the boys. He holds the ability to perform his "Spin Blossom Nut Squash" on command, as seen in "The Return of Chef". He is also able to throw shurikens correctly, as demonstrated by hitting Butters directly in the eye with one in "Good Times with Weapons". He occasionally gets into physical confrontations with Cartman due to Cartman's abusive nature (especially in early seasons).

Kenny Omega Makes AEW Return, Teases Epic Rematch Before Brutal Attack on Dynamite

Although Kenny and Stan do not seem to share the same bond that Stan and Kyle do, Stan does seem to think of Kenny as a close friend. In "Kenny Dies", out of the 3 boys, Stan has the hardest time dealing with Kenny dying, and cannot even bear to see him in the hospital. When Stan finally realizes that Kenny passed on "for good", he feels like he was Kenny's worst friend (until they hear about Cartman's selfishness). The two boys often hang out with one another when Cartman and Kyle get into their arguments and Stan and Kenny do not want to listen to it, such as in "The Passion of the Jew".

Video Games

He can also sing and dance at the same time, extremely evident in "Rainforest Shmainforest", "Something You Can Do with Your Finger" and "Elementary School Musical". Also in "The Red Badge of Gayness", it is shown that he can play the flute as well. He, along with the rest of the fourth grade (third grade at the time), is shown to have (questionable) talent with the recorder as seen in "World Wide Recorder Concert". In a pan flute band he can play the Zampona and he is seen with a trumpet at the end when they think of starting a salsa band. In "Best Friends Forever", Kenny's will states, "In the highly likely event of my death..." By the sixth season, Matt and Trey got rid of the practice of killing him in every episode; as they got tired of the joke.

The ramifications of the attack on Khan will be felt on tonight's AEW Dynamite broadcast, as Khan himself has teased that the "power struggle" within the company is ongoing. That fight for control will get a new layer when Kenny Omega makes his return to programming. But then again, you can’t exactly rush out to buy this record in stores. We’re talking about this lavish estate in L.A.’s Studio City, which tax records show has just sold for a discounted but still lofty $6.3 million. David Burd, the 35-year-old Philadelphia native better known as rapper-comedian Lil Dicky.

He dressed up and posed as Michael Jackson's son in "The Jeffersons" as Blanket Jackson. He was also part of the South Park Elementary school Christmas play in "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo". Kenny is shown to be one of the more intelligent characters later on in the series; along with Kyle, Stan, Jimmy, and Tolkien.

He (as Mysterion) reveals to Captain Hindsight that he can sometimes see "a bright light", "Heaven", or "Hell". However, it is also revealed that nobody can remember him dying by the next day, even if they had seen him get decapitated with their own eyes. This would suggest that Kenny is fully aware of his deaths, but nobody else is. "Coon vs. Coon & Friends", in a desperate plea to his friends to try remember his death, Mysterion shoots himself in the head twice, but to no avail. Kenny briefly had a girlfriend named Kelly in "Rainforest Shmainforest" (she was first to admit her feelings for him) who came to his aid during one of his famous "death" scenes.

Personality

In "The List", Cartman frequently mentions that his family eats Pop-Tarts for dinner. This is actually proven at the end of the episode; Kenny and his family are all seen eating Pop-Tarts before a stray bullet kills Kenny at the dinner table. In "Best Friends Forever" it is shown that all of Kenny's possessions are kept in a small cardboard box. Though his family is extremely poor, his parents are known drug addicts and heavy drinkers. They drink so much that only a fairly large income would pay for it, which might explain the degree of poverty. In "Lil' Crime Stoppers", it is suggested that the McCormicks make meth for a drug cartel and in "The Poor Kid", they are arrested for having a meth lab.

Kenny can also be seen shaking Butters' hand after kissing Sally Darson in "Butters' Bottom Bitch". In "Going Native" Butters considers Kenny his only true friend and allows him to go to Hawaii with him, against his initial protest. Kenny is most famous for dying in almost every episode in the first five seasons of South Park. He is also easily recognizable for almost always wearing an orange parka, or just having his face hidden, that covers most of his face and muffles his speech. In "Mysterion Rises" Kenny, who is revealed to be the superhero Mysterion, reveals that he has the power of immortality, in a sense, and that he just wakes up in his bed after having died.

In the next episode, "Spontaneous Combustion", it is revealed that he spends a lot of time at a new girlfriend's house but the viewer never sees her. Because Kenny had started dating Kelly in the previous episode, it is safe to assume that they are one and the same. Kelly has not been heard of since, although she was seen at the dance in "Hooked on Monkey Fonics", possibly having arranged to meet up with Kenny, but not being able to as he is dead at that point. If you look closely, however, you can actually see parts of Kenny's parka with Kelly at the dance.

His parents are both unstable alcoholics and occasional drug users, the former which was a trait that his father Stuart inherited from his own father. Kenny attempting to remove power sockets while standing on top of a puddle. In some episodes Kenny is known to do some crimes on his own, but not very often, in part due to him usually being selfless, albeit somewhat lecherous. The most sought after address in all of South park for only the very privileged few.

Out back, the manicured grounds offer lush respites for reading or sunbathing, grassy lawns and a lap pool with a spa. There’s also a detached two-car garage topped by a guest apartment that formerly served as Kenny G’s at-home recording studio. In November 2018, PEOPLE reported that the saxophonist had listed his 3,916-square-foot gated farmhouse for $3.995 million with Matt Epstein at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties. Now, after more than two years on the market, the home has finally sold for $2.765 million, according to property records - $1.23 million (or about 30%) less than the original asking price. One of them was his Bel-Air mansion, which he sold in 2015 for $50 million.

Stuart's alcoholism is probably why the McCormick family is so far into poverty. Kenny is shown to not care when Stuart and Kevin are fighting, merely watching television with a bored look. In "The Ring", upon finding out that his girlfriend Tammy Warner gave another boy a "B.J." (oral sex) in a T.G.I. Friday's parking lot, he pursued that wish throughout the episode and eventually got his wish, though he subsequently died of syphilis. In "Fat Camp", he gave Howard Stern a "hummer" (also oral sex) for ten bucks while promoting his Krazy Kenny Show. In "Volcano", he blows up the fish with a grenade in the lake and shoots a ram down with a shotgun.

Omega has been out of action since December 2023 as he has been recovering from diverticulitis. While it is unclear as to if Omega will be cleared for competition on tonight's show, current speculation is that he will announce himself to be AEW's on-screen authority figure in Khan's absence. Omega's history with The Elite makes his return an intriguing development, as he previously was that group's centerpiece alongside the Young Bucks. His replacement within the faction, Kazuchika Okada, is Omega's most storied rival.

A Philosophy of Software Design Book Summary and Top Ideas

a philosophy of software design

Designing things twice (Chapter 11) is a suggestion that hits close to home. This is advice I've been suggesting to people to get better at designing systems, well before I read this book. This post summarizes key takeaways of the book and my take on these principles, drawing from my professional and industry experience.

List of software development philosophies

(it's 180 pages, so it's a quick read.) Each chapter is short and to the point, like the entire book. This doesn't mean "generalised" implementations that support extra features thatyou don't need - it means writing methods that are not overly specialised. Thesweet spot is a somewhat general-purpose approach, which hopefully provides asimpler and deeper interface. "Agile" and similar approaches to software development tend to be focused onsmall, tactical changes. It's easy in this environment to forget about investingin the codebase, especially in startup companies that have a lot of pressure todeliver features.

Abstraction and Encapsulation:

Sharing design ideas upfront and opening a debate using these tools is a great way to build more sturdy architecture. Especially when applying the "design it twice" principle, and writing up alternative designs considered, and the tradeoffs why the other design was not chosen. Still, I wondered just how much I would learn about software design from experience partially distilled from a classroom - even if a Stanford classroom.

Unit tests

The author generally supports writing unit tests, which can catch problems during refactoring; he doesn’t like TDD. When fixing defects that can be tested beforehand, he suggests adopting TDD so that the test may verify that the bug was fixed once the required adjustments have been made. The book also introduces a set of red flags that identify design problems.

The first part of the book focuses on good, modular design practices, while the second part of the book touches on techniques to make the code simple, as well as goes in-depth on commenting best practices. People sometimes ask me if there are other books on design that I would recommend. Unfortunately, I haven't seen very many publications that I like, but one book I do like is The Art of Readable Code by Dustin Boswell and Trevor Foucher. It's written at a lower level than APOSD (more about coding than design), but it is compatible with APOSD in philosophy has a bunch of good ideas.

Chapter 18 — Code Should be Obvious

This means that the interface of some functionality should be a lot simpler than its implementation. That way, the cost of understanding and using the interface is lower than the benefit of the implemented functionality, thus helping to lower the overall complexity of the system. A module in this sense can be anything from a method or function, to a class or a subsystem. The goal of software design is to reduce the complexity of the system.

Deep modules

It's awell-structured, concise read about managing complexity in software design. An example of a deep module is the Unix/Linux system calls for I/O operations. There are five of them (open, read, write, lseek, close), and the signatures are simple, but they hide an enormous amount of implementation details on how files are stored and accessed on disk. In contrast, an example of a shallow module is the Java I/O classes. In order to open and read from a file, you need to use a FileInputStream, a BufferedInputStream and a ObjectInputStream.

There are multiple chapters on code comments; even Chapter 15 has the title “Write The Comments First” (Comments-first development?). He states, “Every class should have an interface comment, every class variable should have a comment, and every method should have an interface comment.” This way of thinking introduces a lot of noise in the code. Such comments need to be constantly synced with the changes in the code.

Event-driven programming makes code less obvious

Stanford University Professor of Computer Science John Ousterhout says it is a decomposition problem. In his book “A Philosophy of Software Design,” he advocates that good software design means fighting complexity and recommends different strategies for dealing with it. The book was initially published in 2018, and its second edition was released in 2021.

Even if you don’t agree with everything it is still a good addition to your library of programming books. I very much recommend the first half of the book - chapters 1-9 and chapter 14 - for all software engineers to read, digest, and consider applying. Concepts like depth of modules, layers adding complexity - or keeping complexity at bay - and information hiding are pragmatic tools to use when designing software. The book offers a fresh take on the concept of abstractions, and nicely complements principles like simplicity, KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid) and YAGNI (You Ain't Gonna Need It). I have to disagree with the excessive use of code comments, although the author mentions that we should use them only for what is not apparent.

However, the final 70 pages are filled with recommendations about code comments that I find hard to support. Most of the examples the author provides of useful comments could easily be replaced with better named variables and methods. Because of this poor advice, I can’t recommend this book for junior engineers.

These interfaces accumulate to create tremendous complexity at the system level. Small classes also result in a verbose programming style, due to the boilerplate required for each class. People oftenbreak a routine into multiple functions for the purpose of making it "easier" toread, or to avoid some code duplication, or to lower a cyclomatic complexityscore.

a philosophy of software design

I particularly like the way the author challenges conventional thinking within software industry and highlights the inefficiency in this thinking. Despite this, the critical issue in any software project is always how to successfully manage the complexity going forward. In the particular project I am architecting there are a lot of moving parts, integrations and complex workflows that need to be addressed, this can often result in spinning out of control quickly.

There isn't much to say about this, other than thatI intuitively agree. The book is also quite small and light which makes a great read for your daily commutes. The author emphasises the benefits of trying to stay in Technical Credit rather than Technical Debt. John, on the other hand, had the vantage point of having multiple teams solve the same design problem during a semester, with him observing. With each repeat, he was able to both validate and tweak his observations.

John mentions that consistent naming contributes to less complexity - something I wholeheartedly agree with. This approach can be used at different system levels, from the interface selection to the method implementation. For interfaces, we are the one that matches close the operations happening in higher-level software, while for implementations, the goals are simplicity and performance. The two main approaches areto see if you can add the pass-through state onto an object that is alreadyshared between the top and bottom methods, or to make it a globalvariable. Other strategies include masking, where the exception is caught and handled at a lower level, so the caller doesn’t have to, and exception aggregation, reducing the number of exceptions that must be handled. The tactic of defining cases out of existence can also be used on special cases.

This leads to good noise performance, with a sound profile of 55dB under normal conditions, 40-45dB under optimum conditions – going up to 60-62dB under stress. Carrier’s premium unit, the Carrier 24VNA0 is the HVAC manufacturer’s pride, boasting high SEER (20.5), quiet operation and excellent smart technology support. These new air conditioners have also been reviewed and tested under the new 2023 testing procedures and have SEER2 and EER2 ratings published. These new air conditioners are just several models that will meet the new 2023 Department of Energy efficiency standards. We will be offering a full line of cooling products that meet the newly set criteria this year, ahead of the January 1, 2023 deadline as part of our #2023READY initiative.

Models with a variable-speed compressor provide excellent humidity control because they can operate at lower speeds for longer times. So, they spend more time pulling humidity out of the air than models with a two-stage or single-stage compressor. Consider units with additional features such as smart features and Wi-Fi connectivity, remote control, sleep modes, and automatic switch between cooling and heating. Factors that affect installation pricing include the number of units, their size, and the components used. Mini-splits that are easier to install generally come with lower installation costs.

While there are plenty of options to choose from, knowing which brands are the best choices can be a confusing process. Selecting an air conditioner from one of the well-known top AC manufacturers is a great choice for those who can afford it, but not everyone can. This guide will review some of the best air-conditioner brands to purchase, whether it’s a high-end system or a quality budget-priced model. Yes, a quality air conditioner from a reputable brand will last longer, be more energy-efficient and have better reliability. Although top-brand air conditioners are expensive, you will likely save money in the long term due to increased lifespan and efficiency. The specs of each AC unit including, the number of central AC models available, maximum SEER rating, average noise, parts warranty and compressor warranty were 33% of each company’s total score.

Attractive and easy to install

Lennox’s premium unit costs more than $7000 with installation, but the installation costs in only $3000, thus it is not categorized as cost-intensive. This is the first investment you would have to make when choosing to own an air conditioner. There are some inexpensive options here as well such as Rheem, offering a 13 SEER unit for only $990. Although it might seem normal, or even low when compared to other HVAC manufacturers, such as Lennox for example; Rheem’s 20 SEER unit costs only about $3,900 (2.5-ton unit)! This makes Rheem a very wallet-friendly choice when considered in relation to prices put forth by its competitors.

The company—which was founded by He Xiangjan in China in 1968—has been producing air conditioners since 1985. Today, they offer an assortment of cooling products, both for residential and commercial use. The company’s units also have several environmentally friendly features such as iQ drive, which manages the compressor output to keep energy use at a minimum while operating at a lower than average noise level. As with its line of appliances, Maytag is also known for its dependability with air conditioners, too.

The 10 Best HVAC and Air Conditioning Companies in Los Angeles

Evaporative coolers are most effective in hot, dry climates and are energy efficient with a low environmental impact. They are less effective in areas with consistently high humidity and do not reduce temperatures as much as standard air conditioners. Setting your smart or programmable thermostat at the right temperature can reduce your cooling costs by about 10 percent. The right temperature depends on your comfort level, but start by setting it at 78° F and experiment until you find the sweet spot. You’ll save about 3 percent on your utility bill for every degree you raise the set temperature for your central air, according to the Department of Energy. And keep in mind that using a box or ceiling fan, which costs little to run, can make you feel 3° F to 4° F cooler.

And your local building codes might have regulations about how close an outdoor compressor is allowed to be to a neighbor’s window or property line. To provide cooling throughout the home, an air conditioner transfers heat from a home’s interior to the outdoors. To arrive at the average costs in this article, we surveyed two material providers, two contractors and 13 local and national cost databases. All averaged figures were correct at the time of publication and may be subject to change. In addition to a company having good reviews, you want to choose a company that has many reviews. When evaluating reviews, be cautious if you come across a company with very few or outdated reviews.

Its EcoNet products allow you to fully integrate your home’s heating and cooling systems to maximize comfort and savings. Goodman began in 1975 manufacturing flexible air ducts, then expanded to air conditioners seven years later. Though known in the past for relatively standard AC units, its products have improved in quality and durability since Daikin Industries acquired the company in 2012. Carrier partners with Energy Star to meet strict energy efficiency requirements set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This, combined with the company’s low sound ratings and variable speed compressors, results in some of the highest-performing AC units available.

Book Review: A Philosophy of Software Design

a philosophy of software design

In chapter 20, the author addresses the topic of performance optimizations. He says that if you try to optimize every statement for maximum speed, it will slow down development and create complexity. Still, if you ignore performance, it is easy to create a system with significant inefficiencies through the code (called the “death by a thousand cuts” scenario). The solution is in the middle, so we design things that are “naturally efficient” but also clean and simple to know which operations are expensive.

John Ousterhout

a philosophy of software design

And in the best modules, the deep functionality is hidden behind a simple interface. If we think about the most complex problems in Computer Science, there are different thoughts on this. Where you must handle exceptions, you should prefer to handle many exceptionswith a single piece of code. There are two main ways to handle exceptions, each with their owncomplexity. The first is to complete the work in spite of the exception, and thesecond is to report the exception upwards (perhaps also running some unwinding /handling logic).

Rules of thumb, laws, guidelines and principles

For the benefit of people who already purchased the First Edition, I have made the two new chapters and the comparisons with Clean Code available in a book extract. It may not be worth buying the Second Edition if you already own the First Edition. Overall, I'm largely in agreement with Ousterhout and with your own assessment of his book. With respect, we disagree somewhat about things you question Ousterhout's text. Complexity is anything related to the structure of a software system that makes it hard to understand and modify the system.

a philosophy of software design

A philosophy of software design - John Ousterhout

By this the author means that the interface should be general enough to support multiple implementations, even though the implementation only covers what is needed today. Reducing the API to a few general purpose methods instead of many special purpose will do this and make the module deep. An example for an interactive text editor is given, where several functions, like delete, backspace, deleteSelection etc, were replaced by the more general purpose functions insert and delete. This resulted in clearer division of functionality, as well as a simplified interface. Calling out event-driven programming as something that makes the code less obvious (Chapter 18) is an interesting take, that I would have hesitated to phrase as such.

Comprehensive systems

When developing a module, look for opportunities to take a little bit of extra suffering upon yourself in order to reduce the suffering of your users. The simplest chapter abstracting the deeper complexities of what it means! It would also have been interesting if the author had included something about testing and how to write code that is easy to test.

BONUS: A Philosophy of Software Design, John Ousterhout (Talks at Google)

Any change to the sender usually also requires a change to the receiver. An example is if you add a new exception, and you then also need to add a new entry in an error message table, but the connection between them is not obvious. IEEE Software presents pioneering ideas, expert analysis, and thoughtful insights for software professionals who need to keep up with rapid technology change. The book does leave a glaring gap on testing and how testability and good architecture go hand in hand. I would recommend a book like Clean Code or Working Effectively with Legacy Code to augment the topics written here.

Everything that is discussed in the book is at a fairly general and high-level, but it's still very helpful. As developers, we ultimately owe to ourselves to ensure we reduce complexity. The by-product of reducing complexity for ourselves is that we develop better products for our users. Furthermore, when you work in a codebase, you can easily navigate in and out of methods. In these cases, a comment describing what a method does doesn’t help much.

Complexity defined

The author is a professor of Computer Science at Stanford, but he has also spent 14 years developing commercial software. John Ousterhout, professor of computer science at Stanford University, joined SE Radio host Jeff Doolittle for a conversation about his book, A Philosophy of Software Design (Yaknyam Press). They discuss the history and ongoing challenges of software system design, especially the nature of complexity and the difficulties in handling it. The conversation also explores various design concepts from the book, including modularity, layering, abstraction, information hiding, maintainability, and readability. By encapsulating complexity via modular design and making code simple and obvious, like eliminating special cases or using consistent coding styles.

If all special cases can be excluded at the beginning, no checks are needed after that. Maybe all the data needed could be combined in a single data structure. The next step is to rearrange the code to be optimized to get as close as possible to this ideal case. A connection with previous chapters is that deep modules are more efficient than shallow, since more work is done for each method call.

This book discusses how to decompose complex software systems into modules that can be implemented relatively independently. The discussion first begins with a fundamental problem in software design, managing complexity. It then discusses philosophical issues about how to approach the software design process, and it presents a collection of design principles to apply during software design. The benefit of using the interface rather than the implementation directly is not very big, so it doesn’t help in reducing the complexity of the system. It is interesting that this is the complete opposite of the advice in for example Clean Code. There the mantra is to use many small classes and methods, rather than a few bigger ones.

Names should be precise (you usually want to avoid overly-general names likedata), and consistent - if a name is used in multiple places it should refer tothe same thing. If the same name is used to refer to different concepts, then atsome point a reader will be confused, which is likely to introduce errors to theprogram. This is not always bad - the important thing is that each new method shouldcontribute significant functionality. For example, a dispatcher method is apass-through method that can be very useful. Once a codebase gets complex enough, it is nearly impossible to fix, and youwill probably pay high development costs for the rest of its life. I have to be honest, that is exactly how I approached this problem initially.

You still often need to check the details of the code to know that your change will be correct. The problem with comments is that they can get out of sync with the code, and that they clog up the code. In most cases, well-chosen names for methods and variables makes comments unnecessary. If the code is so complicated that it needs to be explained with comments, perhaps it can be rewritten to make it clearer.

We can do this by masking exceptions by detecting and handling them at a low level or aggregating them in a single piece of code at a higher level. What we usually see with startups is pressure to build products quickly, which can result in spaghetti code. One of those is to hire great people who like to work with high-quality codebases. In addition, we need to make our development 10-20% slower, and you will get it all back in the future (this also reduces tech debt).

Cork in Ireland was her first port of call on her way to Hamburg, Germany to commence the remaining 2017 cruise season with ports of call in Europe, Africa and the Indian Ocean. The ship finally was allowed to depart Fremantle on Saturday with the eight remaining passengers, all of whom either couldn't or wouldn't fly. Several other passengers who were caught in the quarantine were allowed to fly home Sunday from Fremantle on another chartered flight.

About Phoenix Reisen

At the beginning Phoenix Reisen was a pure high sea cruise line but expanded its range in 1993 to include the popular river cruises. Only a few ships have as many regular customers as the ships of Phoenix Reisen. Thanks to the friendly and familiar atmosphere on board also new customers and cruise newcomers feel at home . In addition to the ocean-going vessels, there are a few smaller vessels for exceptional sailing and numerous river boats.

It now plans to drop by the Philippines to let more crew members disembark before returning to Germany.

The Phoenix Reisen flagship on my cruise turned out to be a ship full of wonderful places, a fantastic crew and an interesting bunch of passengers from my home country. Artania is definitely not holding her exceptional position on the German cruise market by chance. Built for Princess Cruises as the largest passenger ship ever purpose-built for cruises, she was also the first cruise ship to have only outside and balcony cabins. Artania was in Sydney, Australia in March when ports around the world began shutting down to cruise ships. It was then that what may end up being an 11-week odyssey for the eight passengers still on board the vessel began.

The 2-phase project included a complete refurbishment of a total of 255 passenger staterooms (on 3 cabin decks/total interior space ~32938 ft2/3060 m2), including 64 suites (52x Junior plus 12x Gold). The accommodations received new carpets and furniture, plus some electrical works and minor redesigning (wall modifications). Drydock 2019 (November 17 through December 6, at Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven) was a 3-week refurbishment project for mainly general maintenance works (by the shipyard) and interior renovations (by the shipowner MS Artania Shipping Ltd). The USD 25 million project involved ~120 shipyard employees in addition to the subcontractor workers. The 44,656-ton, 1,200-passenger cruise ship Artania was built in 1984 (in Helsinki) as the MS Royal Princess for Princess Cruises and christened by Lady Diana. The ship sailed with P&O Cruises until Apr 2011, when she was moved to the fleet of Phoenix Reisen as Artania.

The company said two passengers and a crew member died during the ship's quarantine due to COVID-19. And two crew members who found love on board were married along the wharf in Fremantle before the ship departed. Only then will Artania begin the long voyage home to Bremerhaven, Germany, in earnest. Along with the eight passengers, it will sail with a skeleton crew the company says will number around 75. On March 15, with ports closing, Phoenix Reisen gave the ship's mostly German customers the opportunity to fly home from Sydney, and 199 took the company up on the offer.

Phoenix Reisen’s Artania set sail from Germany on Saturday for a 143-night world cruise. Sailing from Hamburg to Savona, in Italy, the global itinerary is one of the longest being offered by the German brand this year. On March 18, Artania left Sydney for Fremantle, Australia (the port for Perth) where it planned to make a quick fuel stop before continuing across the Indian Ocean to Africa, the Suez Canal and Europe.

But they overlooked the plight of the Artania, a 1,188-passenger vessel marketed by German cruise seller Phoenix Reisen. At this very moment, as you read this, there are eight people who are in the midst of what may be the most bizarre cruise experience ever. The Artania is the second ship to set sail on a world cruise for Phoenix Reisen this year. Replacing the Amera, the Celestyal Journey also kicked off a 143-night global journey in Savona, Italy on Dec. 21.

This journey as been a sad one. As of Friday, four people from the ship have since died from the coronavirus.

There is no automatic debit from the onboard account, you receive various envelopes instead in which you put banknotes (for the restaurant crew, cabin steward, galley and others). There are no two separate seatings anymore, but only one long one, with a free choice of restaurants, tables and arrival times. The Artania Restaurant on deck 3 and the Vier Jahreszeiten Restaurant (Four Seasons) on deck 2 have a combined capacity of 900 seats, and the Lido Restaurant (buffet) offers space for another 280.

(Artania’s total passenger capacity is for 1,260 guests.) If you wish to reserve a certain table, you can arrange this with the maitre d’, otherwise you come and go as you please. In the evening, table wine is included in the cruise fare, while in the morning, I found breakfast in the Lido Restaurant fantastic. There were freshly baked rolls and freshly baked bread available each day and beside the usual tea and coffee, no less than four kinds of fruit juices were on offer.

There is personnel speaking English, but no services in English are provided. The only language used officially on ms Artania is German, and therefore most of the passengers are from German-speaking countries. There is usually personnel who speaks English, but no services in English (tours, menus, etc.) are provided. It’s strongly recommended to know a bit of German if you decide to travel on MS Artania. One of the most bizarre stories in the history of cruising finally has an ending. If you speak German and would enjoy cruising on a midsize, classic ship with character and charm, then Phoenix Reisen’s Artania could be a perfect fit.

On April 22, 2011, the ship was renamed "Artania" and chartered to Phoenix Reisen. This was presumably to allow any passengers with symptoms to be treated. When in port, Phoenix offered a fair number of organized excursions – five in Harwich (for London, Cambridge and Constable Country respectively) and four in Amsterdam (for Amsterdam, Volendam and Den Haag). I didn’t participate in any, but from what I heard, Phoenix Reisen’s philosophy of taking care of each passenger like it were a member of family also extends to the excursions.

She was built for Princess Cruises by Wärtsilä at the Helsinki Shipyard, Finland, and was launched on 18 February 1984. Everything that body, mind and soul need for a successful holiday can be found aboard the MS Artania. Comfortable sun loungers on the outer decks invite you to sunbathe and relax, activities such as shuffleboard or darts provide variety on deck while you can live out your creativity at various classes. In the evening you can enjoy great shows and performances in the theater after which you can end the evening with a drink in the bar. On board the MS Artania every guest will find exactly the right holiday according to their own wishes.

Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. More than 750 feet long and 106 feet wide, Artania has eight passenger decks, meaning each of the eight passengers could have had an entire deck to themselves. They also could in theory have spread out among dozens of cabins a piece. The ship finally was allowed to depart Fremantle in late April with eight remaining passengers, all of whom either couldn't or wouldn't fly. Instead, it detoured to both Bali, Indonesia, and the Philippine capital, Manila, to drop off the majority of its crew members.

At least I (45) found myself lowering the average age considerably on Artania. On that particular North Sea cruise, there was hardly anyone younger than 40 around, and at below 50, one still belonged to the “youngsters” onboard. That does not mean that families with children aren’t welcome onboard Artania, but for obvious reasons, families tend to opt for much larger ships with a wider array of dedicated facilities for children and teenagers. However, don’t expect everyone to wear gala attire or show off her (or his) jewellery all day and night. The Phoenix Reisen dress code is very casual, only on gala nights or special occasions, elegant clothing is recommended. You usually don’t go on a Phoenix ship because of its sports and wellness opportunities, but nevertheless, Artania offers a number of respective facilities.

A third ship, the Amadea, is also scheduled to offer an intercontinental cruise for the company during the winter season. Starting in January, the ship sails a 94-night itinerary across South America that also features visits to ports in the Caribbean and the North Atlantic. By the time Artania reached Fremantle a week later, seven people on the ship had tested positive for COVID-19, which resulted in the ship being quarantined in the city for two weeks. Testing eventually showed several dozen more with the illness, and they were taken to local hospitals. For weeks, the eight passengers on Artania had been the only cruise passengers still on a ship sailing the world's oceans. The ship's last drydock refurb was in 2022 (in April and later in November).

All staterooms onboard ms Artania are exterior cabins and half of them are Suites or Junior Suites with private balconies. All rooms are equipped with individually controllable air-conditioning, sat-TV, radio, telephone, safe, fridge/mini-bar, shower/bathtub and hairdryer. At the time she was launched, Artania was the most innovative vessel in the world introducing public space on the lower decks with blocks of staterooms over them. This made her the first cruise vessel with all outside rooms and the first one to secure standard cabins with balconies. Artania sailed the South Pacific, New Zealand and Oceania for the first part of 2017, docking at Wellington Harbour on 27 February.
